Endoscopic Revision after Gastric Bypass is a procedure for patients who have had a prior Gastric Bypass Surgery and find that after initial significant weight loss they are now regaining weight. Gastric Bypass is a common weight loss procedure. It works by creating  a small stomach pouch and a small opening ( or outlet)  between the stomach pouch and the small intestine. This small pouch and small opening helps patients limit the amount of food they can eat and contributes to a sensation of fullness after eating. The patient feels satisfied  even after a small meal and this results in weight loss. Over time, the stomach pouch can stretch or the opening between the stomach pouch and the small intestine can  stretch. As a result, patients can eat more food before feeling full and  find they are starting to regain weight.

Endoscopic Revision is a way to address this problem. This involves passing a lighted instrument ( a gastroscope ) to the area where the stomach pouch joins the small intestine. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia for maximum safety and comfort. Using the instrument, stitches are placed in order to reduce the size of the opening between the stomach pouch and the small intestine. Stitches can also be placed to reduce the size of the gastric pouch. This procedure should help to limit the amount that can be eaten and increase the sensation of fullness after eating. This should result in renewed weight loss.

In patients who have previously had Gastric Bypass, this procedure offers several advantages. Scarring and adhesions resulting from a prior Gastric Bypass would make an open or laparoscopic surgical revision more technically difficult and more risky. This is a non-surgical procedure so there is no scarring, less risk of complications, less pain, and faster recovery. There is less time off needed from work and faster return to normal activities. The procedure is performed at an ambulatory surgery center as opposed to a hospital and is therefore more economical.
