ENDOSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTROPLASTY (ESG) VS HIGH-INTENSITY DIET AND LIFESTYLE THERAPY
An article in the February 2020 edition of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy compared a group of overweight patients that underwent ESG against a group that underwent high-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy. After 12 months, the group that underwent ESG showed a total body weight loss of 20.6% vs 14.3% in the group that underwent high-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy alone. The conclusion was that after 12 months the patients who underwent ESG achieved significantly greater weight loss than patients enrolled in high-intensity diet and lifestyle therapy.
ESG appears to be a useful option for patients who have difficulty complying with high-intensity diet and life style therapy.
ENDOSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTROPLASTY (ESG) VS GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY
An article in the April 2019 edition of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy compared patients who underwent ESG to those who underwent Gastric Sleeve Surgery. The study showed less risk of complications with ESG, 5.2% vs 16.9%. There was less risk of developing GERD (heartburn) with ESG, 1.9% vs 14.5%. The percentage of total body weight loss was greater with Gastric Sleeve Surgery, 23.6% vs 17.1%.
Compared with Gastric Sleeve Surgery, ESG patients experience less risk, fewer complications, less time off from work, and faster return to normal activities. There is no scarring and less pain. Because ESG is performed at a surgery center on an outpatient basis, as opposed to a hospital, it is also generally more economical.
