About Our Practice

Our practice offers three minimally invasive endoscopic weight loss (bariatric) procedures. These include endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) or accordion procedure; endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty after gastric sleeve surgery, also known as endoscopic revision after gastric sleeve surgery for patients that have previously undergone gastric sleeve surgery; and endoscopic revision after gastric bypass for patients that have previously undergone gastric bypass surgery. Detailed information about the procedures is available under the Procedures tab.

Dr. Staffetti and Dr. Ghanekar are board-certified gastroenterologists trained in minimally invasive endoscopic procedures. They are proficient in endoscopic procedures including upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, enteroscopy, and ERCP for the treatment of disorders of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, anus, pancreas, gallbladder, and liver.

Background

Being overweight is a common problem in the United States and is associated with a variety of health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, elevation of cholesterol and triglycerides, stroke, fatty liver, kidney disease, arthritis, sleep apnea, acid reflux, problems in pregnancy, blood clots, gallbladder disease, and endometrial, breast, prostate, and colon cancer.

Overweight is defined as a BMI (body mass index) of 25 – 29.9. Obesity is defined as a BMI of 30 and above. Extreme obesity is defined as a BMI of 40 or greater. About 1/3 of Americans are overweight, 1/3 are obese, and 4.5% have extreme obesity.

Diet and increased physical activity are the preferred methods of weight loss. Many people, however, find that despite their best efforts, they are unable to lose weight. For these motivated patients, the minimally invasive procedures we perform, in conjunction with diet and exercise, give them the ability to succeed in their goal of attaining a healthy weight.

There is evidence that even modest weight loss of 5 – 10% of body weight can have beneficial effects on diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and heart disease.

Our Philosophy

We have a team approach to weight loss. The patient is the most important member of the team. The patient’s motivation, discipline, and drive to attain a healthy weight are the key to success.

In conjunction with the weight loss procedure, a commitment to a healthy diet and lifestyle that includes regular physical activity is important for success. Therefore, we will arrange for the patient to see a dietitian to provide advice and sample menus for a healthy diet.

Ongoing follow-up with a dietitian will be important after the procedure. We will also arrange for the patient to be evaluated by a personal trainer to develop an exercise plan tailored to the needs of the patient.
